The Invalidity of Diagonalization Proof for Halting Problem

چکیده

We examine the converse of Church-Turing thesis and establish the existence of uncountable number of accelerated Turing machines. This leads to the case that these machines are unaffected by Gödel’s incompleteness

Self-referential basis of undecidable dynamics: from The Liar Paradox and The Halting Problem to The Edge of Chaos

In this paper we explore several fundamental relations between formal systems, algorithms, and dynamical systems, focussing on the roles of undecidability, universality, diagonalization, and self-reference in each of these computational frameworks. Some of these interconnections are well-known, while some are clarified in this study as a result of a fine-grained comparison between recursive for...

Barriers in Complexity Theory

Several proof methods have been successfully employed over the years to prove several important results in Complexity Theory, but no one has been able to settle the question P =?NP. This article surveys three of the main proof methods used in Complexity Theory, and then shows that they cannot be used to prove P =?NP, thus exposing technical barriers to the advance of Complexity Theory. The firs...

An Explicit Solution to Post's Problem over the Reals

In the BSS model of real number computations we prove a concrete and explicit semi-decidable language to be undecidable yet not reducible from (and thus strictly easier than) the real Halting Language. This solution to Post’s Problem over the reals significantly differs from its classical, discrete variant where advanced diagonalization techniques are only known to yield the existence of such i...

Automata Theory - Final (Solutions)

1. Diagonalization: The Halting problem is defined as follows: Given a TuringMachineM = 〈Q, {0, 1},Γ, δ, q0,2, F 〉 and a string w ∈ Σ∗, determine whether M halts on w. In class, we proved that the Halting problem is undecidable using two different techniques. The first technique was constructive, where we constructed a series of Turing Machines, which led to a contradiction. The second techniqu...

Avoiding Contradictions in the Paradoxes, the Halting Problem, and Diagonalization

The fundamental proposal in this article is that logical formulas of the form (f ↔ ¬f) are not contradictions, and that formulas of the form (t ↔ t) are not tautologies. Such formulas, wherever they appear in mathematics, are instead reason to conclude that f and t have a third truth value, different from true and false. These formulas are circular definitions of f and t. We can interpret the i...
